LEGACY MODERNIZATION WITHOUT BUSINESS DISRUPTION

Legacy modernization doesn’t have to mean risky big-bang projects or business disruption. At Mikrum, we help you modernize step by step, keeping your systems running while continuously improving and evolving your business.

Lower risk through incremental modernization

Modernization aligned with real business priorities

Keep business operations and development running continuously

Predictable transformation with continuous validation

BIG-BANG MODERNIZATION VERSUS INCREMENTAL EXECUTION

Traditional modernization projects often rely on a “big-bang” rewrite, replacing an entire system in one large, high-risk initiative with results only visible at the end. At Mikrum, we take a different approach: instead of betting everything on a single release, we approach modernization as a series of smaller, controlled steps with the transformation broken down into manageable units, each delivering a specific outcome. This allows us to reduce risk, maintain business continuity, and adapt as priorities evolve.

By distributing risk across manageable changes legacy modernization becomes easier to control, adapt, and validate over time. This turns modernization from a disruptive transformation into a predictable, continuous process aligned with business needs.

What this means for your business

  • Faster visibility into progress and business value

  • Greater flexibility to adapt during modernization

  • Continuous delivery without disrupting daily operations

OUR APPROACH TO REDUCING RISK

Modernization becomes more manageable when it follows proven, structured approaches. At Mikrum, we use proven modernization patterns to help control risk while transforming complex systems.

One of the most effective approaches is the Strangler pattern. Instead of treating the system as a whole, we break it down into logical parts based on business functionality, identifying clear boundaries where modules can be separated and replaced independently.

Once these boundaries are defined, parts of the system can be replaced one by one. A new implementation takes over a specific function, while the rest of the system continues to operate unchanged. Over time, more of the legacy system is replaced until the transition is complete.

Isolation between old and new components helps contain changes without impacting the entire system. At the same time, parallel run allows new functionality to operate alongside the existing system, making it possible to compare results and validate behavior before fully switching over. These patterns do not remove complexity, but they make it controllable, allowing systems to evolve step by step without relying on a single high-risk transition.

AI-AUGMENTED LEGACY MODERNIZATION AT SCALE

Legacy modernization is often constrained by one fundamental challenge: understanding existing systems. Traditional approaches rely heavily on manual analysis and individual expertise, making modernization slow, expensive, and difficult to scale.

At Mikrum, we use AI to accelerate the transition from understanding to execution, helping companies move faster. But AI is not a replacement for engineering expertise. Business context, implicit logic, and edge cases still require human oversight. By combining AI with structured engineering practices, we make legacy modernization faster, more scalable, and aligned with real business needs.

A smarter way to modernize

  • Faster understanding of complex legacy systems

  • Reduced dependency on manual analysis

  • More scalable and cost-efficient modernization

  • Human oversight to ensure accuracy and business alignment

Standardized quality, always!

Our quality policy is recognized not only within our organization but also externally: we are proud to hold 3 ISO certifications such as ISO 9000, ISO 27001, and ISO 20000.
